Pre-Sessional English

The main focus of the pre-sessional is on developing language skills in the four disciplines of reading, writing, speaking and listening. Teaching takes place in small groups and each student is assigned a personal tutor who will meet you at least once per week to discuss your progress. The course balances tutor-led teaching with self-study. There will be a mixture of interactive, class-based discussion and listening tasks set by the teacher, as well as guided reading and written tasks to develop skills. Throughout the course, students will be supported through regular face-to-face online tutorials to discuss progress or ask for  feedback. Formative feedback will be provided throughout the course and assessment will be a mixture of coursework and online tests.

• Academic culture and transitioning to higher education
• English for university and language development.
• Critical reading, writing, speaking and listening.
• Structure and coherence in academic writing.
• Extensive reading, note-taking, summarising and referencing.
• Speaking skills for discussions.
• Presentation speaking practice.

We emphasise the importance of developing as an independent learner and your individual tutorials will give you the opportunity to reflect on your own strengths and weaknesses as well as getting feedback from your tutor.
